At 28 Suman Sridhar is part of the electropop duo Sridhar/Thayil, has sung for a wildly popular TVC in 2010, lent her voice to 2 movie sountracks, done theater both in India and the United States ,been part of jazz collaborations in New York earned herself a degree in Western Classical music from Rutgers University, New Jersey and was named one of the top 9 Indian Artists to watch out for by Rolling Stone Magazine India.
Originally from Chembur (Mumbai) the Sridhar family moved to America when Suman was 14. Suman’s roots in Hindustan classical music comes from her parents. Even so she spent her formative teenage years soaking in Jazz influences all across the east coast (US). It wasn’t till her twenties, during her travels across India. that Suman discovered a talent for composing . Around the same time she met up with Jeet Thayil at a performance in Bangalore. In 2008 the duo Sridhar/Thayil performed at the Galle Festival in Sri Lanka followed by Southbank Centre in London, and at the Prithvi Theatre Festival in 2009. Sridhar/Thayil also run a sister project , an opera production called ‘The Flying Wallas: Opera Noir’ . Not surprising considering Jeet’s background as a published poet and Suman’s appearances across America in the musical ‘My Fair Lady’ and ‘Yoni Ki Baat’
In 2010 she belted out a sultry blues rendition of the Mohammed Rafi Classic ‘tum jo mil gaye ho’ for a TV Commercial featuring Imran Khan and Kalki Kochelin. For a singer as talented as Suman it was an endorsment long overdue. On 9th April 2011 at The Park Hotel in Bangalore DJ Uri, Suman Sridhar and Kris Correya (BBC) will be drawing on their influences from Dubstep, Drum and Bass, Hip Hop, Soul, Jazz and Funk for an off the cuff freestyling session!
