MIDIval Punditz – The Interview

MIDIval Punditz have always been ahead of the pack, as far the electronic music scene is in India is concerned. We engage them in a short te-ta-te about their successful journey as musicians thus far.

What do you love about music?

Music is the universal language of the soul and the strongest way to communicate and affect people. I have always wanted to make a change in the world and think music is by far the best way to do so.

Tell us your story, what inspired you to become a musician?

I became a DJ right after school and decided that it was what I wanted. Then my parents wanted me to become an architect so I joined an architecture college and also moonlighted as a DJ and as a Radio Jockey. Very soon after, I realized I wanted to play out my own music, as opposed to being limited to what others had made. So, we formed Midival Punditz and started our musical careers.

After playing countless shows around the world and in India, what is your most favourite venue and why?

I think our favourite venue would be the Glastonbury Festival in the UK. The energy there is far out ! Thousands of people rocking to the greatest music from across the world. It’s truly inspiring.

Being a pioneer in the electronic scene in India, what is your opinion of the newer acts emerging from India. Is there any musician/group you would like to collaborate with?

India and the Indian music scene is at the thresh-hold of a music renaissance of sorts. In the next 5 years, we will see an emergence of strong sounds from our country, in electronica and otherwise. We have always encouraged new bands and producers to explore their sounds and make good honest music. We would love to collaborate with new artists and singers from all styles of music.

With Midival Punditz you collaborate with loads of musicians. What has been the best fit so far and why?

I think our collaborations with musicians from the Indian Classical world, have been truly inspiring and encouraging and a great learning experience. Our work with Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Sultan Khan, Anoushka Shankar and also Kailash Kher has really been truly memorable.
